From tiny freshwater turtles basking on logs to enormous leatherbacks crossing entire oceans, turtles are among the most distinctive animals on Earth. Their protective shells, slow and deliberate movements, remarkable migrations, and extraordinary longevity have fascinated people for generations.
Every May 23, World Turtle Day celebrates turtles and tortoises while drawing attention to the growing challenges many species face in the wild. Created by American Tortoise Rescue in 2000, the annual observance encourages people around the world to learn about these ancient reptiles, protect their habitats, and make choices that help wild populations survive.
Turtles have lived on Earth for more than 200 million years, surviving enormous changes to the planet. Yet today, habitat destruction, roads, wildlife trafficking, pollution, fishing bycatch, climate change, and other human pressures threaten species in oceans, rivers, wetlands, forests, grasslands, and deserts.
World Turtle Day is a wonderful excuse to appreciate these fascinating animals—but turtles are worth understanding and protecting every day of the year.
🐢 What Exactly Is a Turtle?
Turtles belong to the reptile order Testudines, a remarkably diverse group containing roughly 360 living species.
The word turtle is often used broadly to describe every member of this group. That means tortoises are turtles too, even though we commonly use different names for animals with different lifestyles.
In simple terms:
- Tortoises are turtles adapted primarily for life on land.
- Freshwater turtles live in ponds, lakes, rivers, marshes, and other freshwater environments, although many spend considerable time basking on land.
- Sea turtles are highly specialized marine turtles equipped with powerful flippers.
- Terrapin is a common name used differently in different parts of the world rather than a single scientific category. In North America, the diamondback terrapin is the best-known example.
There are exceptions to nearly every easy turtle-versus-tortoise rule, so habitat alone should not be used to classify an unfamiliar species.
The important point is that tortoises, terrapins, freshwater turtles, and sea turtles all belong to the larger turtle family tree.
🐚 A Turtle’s Shell Is Part of Its Skeleton
A turtle shell isn’t a removable suit of armor.
It is a living part of the animal’s body and is closely integrated with its skeleton.
The upper portion of the shell is called the carapace, while the lower section is the plastron. Ribs and vertebrae are incorporated into the shell, helping make turtle anatomy unlike that of any other living vertebrate group.
Many species also have outer plates known as scutes, which are made primarily of keratin—the same general material found in human fingernails.
The shell does much more than provide a hard barrier against predators. Its shape reflects the turtle’s lifestyle.
Land-dwelling tortoises often have high, rounded shells and sturdy legs. Many aquatic turtles have flatter shells that move more efficiently through water, while sea turtles have especially streamlined bodies and paddle-like flippers.
The leatherback sea turtle is unusual because it lacks the hard overlapping scutes seen on most other sea turtles. Instead, its shell is covered by leathery skin over a flexible framework of small bones.
🌍 Turtles Live in Remarkably Different Habitats
It is easy to associate turtles with ponds, but members of the group occupy an impressive range of environments.

Terrestrial turtles and tortoises may inhabit:

Sea turtles spend most of their lives in marine environments ranging from coral reefs and seagrass beds to vast stretches of open ocean.
Wherever they live, turtles are closely tied to the environmental conditions around them. Because reptiles are ectothermic, their body temperature is strongly influenced by their surroundings.
That is why freshwater turtles are so often seen basking on logs, rocks, and shorelines. Sunshine allows them to warm themselves before returning to the water.
🌊 There Are Seven Living Species of Sea Turtle
Only seven species of sea turtle survive today:
- Green sea turtle
- Loggerhead sea turtle
- Leatherback sea turtle
- Hawksbill sea turtle
- Kemp’s ridley sea turtle
- Olive ridley sea turtle
- Flatback sea turtle
Six occur in U.S. waters.
Sea turtles are superbly adapted for ocean life. Their front limbs have evolved into long flippers capable of propelling them across astonishing distances, while their streamlined shells reduce drag in the water.
Unlike most freshwater turtles and tortoises, adult sea turtles cannot pull their heads and limbs completely inside their shells.
They don’t need to come onto land to eat or rest, either. Adult females are primarily the ones that return to beaches, crawling above the tide line to dig nests and lay eggs.
After nesting, they return to the ocean.
🗺️ Sea Turtles Are Extraordinary Travelers
Some turtles undertake journeys that seem almost impossible for an animal moving through such an enormous ocean.
Adult sea turtles may travel hundreds or thousands of miles between feeding grounds and nesting areas.
Leatherback sea turtles are particularly impressive travelers. NOAA has documented leatherbacks traveling 10,000 miles or more in a year.
Even more remarkable is the ability of female sea turtles to return to the general region where they hatched many years earlier.
Scientists have found evidence that turtles can use Earth’s magnetic field as part of their navigation system, effectively giving them a biological compass and map for long-distance travel.
Exactly how turtles combine magnetic information with other environmental cues remains an active area of research.
🥚 All Turtles Lay Eggs
Despite their enormous diversity, living turtles share one important reproductive characteristic: they lay eggs on land.
Even completely marine sea turtles must leave the ocean when it is time to nest.
A female typically digs a nest in soil or sand, deposits her eggs, covers them, and leaves. Most turtle species provide little or no parental care after the eggs are laid.
For hatchlings, survival can be difficult from the moment they emerge.
Eggs and young turtles are eaten by numerous natural predators. Hatchlings may also encounter roads, artificial lighting, habitat changes, pets, pollution, and other human-created hazards.

One of the most fascinating aspects of turtle reproduction is temperature-dependent sex determination.
In many turtle species, the temperature experienced by developing embryos influences whether hatchlings become male or female.
For sea turtles, relatively warmer nests generally produce more females, while cooler conditions tend to produce more males.
This makes changing temperatures a conservation concern.
As nesting beaches become warmer, some turtle populations may develop increasingly uneven sex ratios. Extremely high temperatures can also reduce egg and hatchling survival.
Climate change affects turtles in additional ways, including sea-level rise, stronger coastal erosion, changes to feeding habitat, and shifts in the environments on which different species depend.
🐣 Baby Sea Turtles Face an Extraordinary First Journey
Few wildlife spectacles are as dramatic as sea turtle hatchlings emerging from a nest.
After breaking free from their eggs, hatchlings dig upward through the sand, often emerging together. They then orient toward the sea and begin crawling across the beach.
This short journey is filled with danger.
Natural predators include birds, crabs, mammals, and fish. Human development adds additional hazards.
Artificial lights near nesting beaches can be especially problematic because hatchlings may become disoriented and crawl inland rather than toward the ocean.
Beach furniture, holes dug in the sand, vehicles, litter, and coastal structures can also create obstacles.
If you are fortunate enough to encounter nesting turtles or hatchlings, observe from a respectful distance and follow local wildlife regulations rather than attempting to handle or guide the animals yourself.
🐢 Freshwater Turtles Are Just as Fascinating
Sea turtles receive enormous conservation attention, but the world’s freshwater turtles are equally remarkable.
Some spend much of their time swimming and foraging beneath the surface before climbing onto logs to bask.
Others occupy muddy river bottoms, forested wetlands, slow-moving streams, or temporary ponds.
Species differ dramatically in their diets. Depending on the turtle, foods can include aquatic plants, seeds, fruits, insects, mollusks, crustaceans, fish, amphibians, carrion, and other available resources.
The familiar painted turtle is highly aquatic, while North American box turtles spend much of their lives on land even though they are not tortoises.
Snapping turtles occupy another ecological niche entirely, using powerful jaws and an aquatic lifestyle that differs greatly from the gentle-looking basking turtles people commonly notice around ponds.
There really isn’t one typical turtle.
🏜️ Tortoises Are Built for Life on Land
Tortoises represent the terrestrial side of turtle diversity.
Rather than webbed feet or flippers, most tortoises have thick, sturdy legs designed for walking and digging. Their shells are often high and domed.
Different species inhabit environments ranging from dry deserts to tropical islands and grasslands.
Some of the most famous tortoises are giants.
The giant tortoises of the Galápagos Islands and Aldabra Atoll can live for exceptionally long periods, with some individuals surpassing 100 years.
At the other end of the size spectrum are tiny tortoise species only a few inches long.
The difference between a giant tortoise and one small enough to fit comfortably in your hand illustrates just how much evolutionary variety exists within Testudines.
⏳ Turtles Have Been Around Since the Age of Dinosaurs
Turtles are an extraordinarily ancient reptile lineage.
Fossil evidence shows recognizable early turtles living more than 220 million years ago, during the Triassic Period.
That means turtle ancestors were already present tens of millions of years before famous dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus rex ever appeared.
They survived the mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous Period approximately 66 million years ago, along with many other dramatic changes in Earth’s climate and ecosystems.
Calling modern turtles “living fossils” can be misleading because today’s species have continued evolving rather than remaining unchanged for hundreds of millions of years.
Still, the basic turtle body plan has extraordinarily deep evolutionary roots.
🦷 Turtles Don’t Have Teeth
Modern turtles do not have teeth.
Instead, their jaws are covered by hard, keratinous beaks.
The shape and strength of those beaks vary with diet.
A herbivorous tortoise may use its beak to clip vegetation, while a loggerhead sea turtle possesses powerful jaws capable of crushing hard-shelled prey such as mollusks.
Other turtles have sharp-edged beaks suited to catching fish or tearing food.
The absence of teeth certainly doesn’t mean a turtle cannot bite.
Some species, particularly large snapping turtles, have extremely powerful jaws and should be given plenty of space.
🫁 Turtles Breathe Air
Whether a turtle lives in the desert, a pond, or the middle of the ocean, it has lungs and breathes air.
Sea turtles therefore must regularly surface.
Aquatic turtles can often remain underwater for long periods, especially while resting or during cold weather when their metabolic rates become very low.
Some aquatic species can also exchange limited amounts of oxygen through specialized tissues while submerged, but this ability varies greatly and does not mean that turtles have underwater lungs or can simply breathe water like fish.
This is one factual distinction worth making because descriptions of “turtles breathing through their bottoms” are often exaggerated.
The reality is much more interesting: certain species have specialized physiological adaptations that help them endure long periods underwater.
🌱 Turtles Have Important Ecological Roles
It is difficult to describe a single ecological role for turtles because different species eat and interact with their environments in very different ways.
Some turtles consume plants and disperse seeds.
Others eat insects, mollusks, carrion, fish, and other animals.
Sea turtles can influence marine habitats through feeding. Green turtles, for example, graze on seagrasses in some regions, while hawksbills feed heavily on sponges associated with coral reef ecosystems.
Turtles themselves are also food for other wildlife, particularly during the egg and hatchling stages.
Even their movement between environments can transport nutrients.
When turtle populations decline, ecosystems can therefore lose functions that developed over very long periods of time.
🐦 Why Turtle Survival Depends So Much on Adults
Many turtle species follow what biologists call a slow life-history strategy.
They may grow slowly, take many years to reach reproductive maturity, live for decades, and reproduce repeatedly throughout long adult lives.
At the same time, eggs and hatchlings often experience naturally high mortality.
That means the survival of adult turtles can be especially important to maintaining a population.
An adult female killed while crossing a road isn’t simply one lost animal. She may represent decades of survival and years of future reproduction.
This helps explain why roads, illegal collection, and other causes of adult mortality can have such serious effects on turtle populations.
🚗 Roads Are a Major Threat to Freshwater and Land Turtles
During spring and summer, turtles frequently cross roads while moving between wetlands, searching for nesting sites, or traveling through their home ranges.
Unfortunately, their slow speed makes them especially vulnerable to vehicles.
If you see a turtle crossing a road, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service advises that, if it is safe for you to help, the turtle should be moved across in the direction it was already traveling.
Do not relocate it to a distant pond, park, or area that simply looks safer.
Turtles often have established home ranges and strong instincts about where they are going. Moving one far from its original location can create additional problems.
Never put yourself in danger in traffic, and be extremely cautious around unfamiliar species such as snapping turtles.
🚫 Don’t Take Wild Turtles Home
A turtle found beside a pond isn’t a free pet.
Removing turtles from the wild can contribute to population decline, and laws protecting turtles vary by species and location.
Wild turtles also have specialized environmental needs that may be difficult to reproduce in captivity.
The illegal wildlife trade is a significant conservation problem for turtles and tortoises worldwide. Animals may be collected for the pet trade, food, traditional products, shells, or other commercial uses.
If you want a pet turtle or tortoise, research the commitment carefully and obtain one legally from a reputable captive source or rescue organization.
Some species can live for many decades, making turtle ownership a far longer commitment than many people initially expect.
And never release an unwanted pet turtle into the wild. Contact an appropriate reptile rescue or wildlife organization instead.
🎣 Fishing Bycatch Threatens Sea Turtles
Sea turtles share the ocean with some of the world’s largest fisheries.
Unfortunately, turtles can become accidentally caught in nets, longlines, hooks, traps, and other fishing gear.
This accidental capture is known as bycatch, and it remains one of the major threats facing sea turtles worldwide.
Conservation measures have made meaningful differences in some fisheries.
One important example is the turtle excluder device, or TED, used in certain shrimp trawl nets. These devices create an escape opening that can allow captured sea turtles to leave the net while shrimp remain inside.
Changes to fishing hooks, gear design, fishing practices, and restricted areas can also reduce turtle mortality.
Conservation is therefore not always simply about banning human activity. Sometimes thoughtful changes in technology and practices can allow people and wildlife to coexist more successfully.
🧴 Plastic and Marine Debris Create Additional Hazards
Plastic pollution is another highly visible threat to marine turtles.
Turtles may become entangled in discarded fishing line, nets, plastic loops, or other debris.
They can also ingest plastics after mistaking floating objects for food.
Balloons, bags, fishing gear, and small plastic fragments can all enter marine ecosystems.
Reducing unnecessary single-use plastic is one useful personal step, but responsible disposal matters just as much.
Fishing line should never be left along waterways, and balloons should not be intentionally released outdoors.
Participating in beach, river, lake, or neighborhood cleanups can help remove debris before it reaches wildlife habitat.
🏗️ Habitat Loss Affects Turtles Everywhere
Habitat destruction isn’t only a sea turtle problem.
Freshwater turtles lose habitat when wetlands are filled, waterways are heavily altered, rivers are dammed, shorelines are developed, or natural areas become fragmented by roads.
Tortoises can lose desert, grassland, and forest habitat to development and other land-use changes.
Sea turtle nesting beaches are affected by coastal development, erosion, artificial lighting, shoreline structures, and rising seas.
Because turtles often rely on several habitat types during different stages of their lives, protecting only one small area may not be enough.
A freshwater turtle, for example, might spend most of the year in a wetland but travel over land to reach a nesting site.
Conservation therefore often requires protecting connections between habitats, not just individual ponds or beaches.
🌡️ Climate Change Creates New Challenges
Turtles have survived enormous environmental changes across their evolutionary history, but the rapid pace of modern climate change presents significant challenges.
For sea turtles, warming nest temperatures can alter hatchling sex ratios.
Rising seas and coastal erosion can reduce suitable nesting habitat.
Changing ocean temperatures can shift feeding areas and migration patterns.
Freshwater turtles and tortoises can also be affected by altered rainfall, drought, flooding, wildfire, and habitat changes.
The effects will not be identical for every species. Some populations may adjust better than others.
That is why conserving large, connected, healthy habitats is so important: it gives wildlife more opportunities to respond as environmental conditions change.
🏖️ How to Help Sea Turtles on Vacation
A beach vacation can overlap with sea turtle nesting season in many coastal regions.
A few thoughtful habits can make the beach safer for turtles.
Where local regulations recommend it:
- Keep beaches dark at night.
- Close curtains in beachfront buildings.
- Remove chairs, umbrellas, and equipment when leaving.
- Fill in large holes dug in the sand.
- Dispose of trash properly.
- Keep your distance from nesting turtles.
- Never shine flashlights or camera flashes at a nesting turtle.
- Do not touch hatchlings.
- Follow marked nesting-area restrictions.
If you find an injured, entangled, or stranded sea turtle, contact the local wildlife authority or authorized stranding network rather than attempting a rescue on your own.
🌿 How to Help Turtles Closer to Home
You don’t need to live near an ocean to make a difference.
Freshwater and terrestrial turtles need healthy local habitats too.
Consider reducing pesticide use around ponds and gardens, keeping litter out of storm drains and waterways, preserving native vegetation near wetlands, and driving carefully in areas where turtle crossings are common.
If you have property containing a natural wetland, stream, or pond, retaining vegetated areas around the water can benefit far more wildlife than turtles alone.
You can also support reputable turtle conservation organizations, wildlife rehabilitation centers, nature preserves, and research projects.
One of the simplest actions is simply learning which turtle species live where you are.
Once you recognize your local wildlife, it becomes much easier to notice when it needs protection.
🎉 What Is World Turtle Day?
World Turtle Day® is observed every May 23.
American Tortoise Rescue, founded by Susan Tellem and Marshall Thompson in 1990, created the observance in 2000 to increase awareness and respect for turtles and tortoises and encourage action to protect them and their habitats.
Since then, the celebration has spread internationally, with schools, zoos, aquariums, rescues, conservation organizations, families, and individuals using the occasion to teach people about turtles.
It isn’t simply a day for sharing cute turtle photographs—although there’s nothing wrong with enjoying those too.
At its heart, World Turtle Day is about ensuring that these ancient animals still have wild places in which to live.

You can make May 23 meaningful without planning anything complicated.
Spend some time learning about turtle species native to your region. Visit a reputable zoo, aquarium, nature center, or wildlife refuge. Read about a threatened species you’ve never encountered before.
Families and classrooms can turn the day into a wildlife-learning project by comparing sea turtles, freshwater turtles, and tortoises or creating posters about turtle habitats.

World Turtle Day gives us one day each year to focus attention on a group of animals that has been part of Earth’s story for an almost unimaginable length of time.
But protecting turtles isn’t really about a single date.
It is about allowing a box turtle to finish crossing the road.
It is leaving a sea turtle nest undisturbed.
It is keeping fishing line out of a lake.
It is refusing to purchase illegally collected wildlife.
It is protecting wetlands, beaches, rivers, forests, grasslands, and oceans.
And sometimes it is simply stopping long enough to watch a turtle basking quietly on a log and recognizing that this seemingly ordinary animal represents more than 200 million years of survival.
Turtles have already made it through extraordinary chapters of Earth’s history.
