Free Crochet Pattern: Spotted Owl Pot Holder

Spotted Owl Pot Holder

This cute owl pot holder is made by using three strands of yarn at a time. This way, the pot holder turns out nice and thick! I also love the look of the large stitches, and it saves a bit of time.

Due to the nature of crochet, there may still be “holes” in the finished potholder, so please use your good judgement while using it and feel free to sew on a cloth backing for an extra barrier.

Materials

  • 1 skein Vanna’s Choice Lion Brand in Beige
  • 1 skein Vanna’s Choice Lion Brand in Chocolate
  • 1 skein Loops & Threads ™ Impeccable ™ brand in White
  • 1 skein Loops & Threads ™ Impeccable ™ brand in Bronze
  • N (9.00 mm) hook
  • White, green, and orange embroidery thread
  • Two green buttons for eyes.

These are the colors that I used in the picture, but feel free to use other colors as well – I do! Impeccable ™ and Vanna’s Choice brands work best for me when making these pot holders.

Directions

Body

Using Three Strands

Make at least two balls of beige yarn so you can work with three strands at a time, as pictured above.

Ch 4, sl st to first ch to form loop.

Row 1: Use three strands of beige.  Ch 3, work 13 more dc into loop, sl st to join to ch, turn. (14 sts)

Row 2: Trim one strand of beige and replace with chocolate so that you are now working with two strands of beige and on strand of chocolate. Ch 3, dc in same st, * 2 dc in next st; rep from * to end of row, sl st to join to ch, turn. (28 sts)

Center

At the end of row 2, your potholder should look similar to the image on the left.

Row 3: Trim one strand of beige and replace with chocolate so that you are now working with two strands of chocolate and one strand of beige. Ch 3, dc in same st, * 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st; rep from * to end of row, sl st to join to ch, fasten off. (42 sts)

At this point, pick any spot in the circle to start the ears.

Ears

We will still be using the three strands of beige yarn for the center of the ears.

Row 1: Join to a st on the body circle, ch 1, 2 dc, 2 dc, sc, dec 1, sc, 2 dc,2 dc, sc. (13 st)

Row 2: Trim one beige strand and replace it with chocolate so that you are using 2 beige strands and 1 chocolate strand for this row.

Ch 1, turn, skip 1, 2 dc, 2 dc, sc, dec 1, sc, 2 dc, 2 dc, skip 1, sc. (13 st)

Fasten off. Now your potholder should look similar to the picture below.

Spotted Owl Pot Holder in the Making

Outer Row

Now change to three strands of the chocolate colored yarn. Start where the ears begin on the right, where the hook is in the picture.

Row 1: Join, ch 3, 2 dc in same st, 2 dc (in first st of top row of ears), 2 dc, 2 dc, 2 dc, 1 dc, 1 dc, 1 dc in top center, 1 dc, 1 dc, 2 dc, 2 dc, 2 dc, 2 dc (in last st of top row of ears), 3 dc in last chain of the ears. Continue around body: (* 1 dc, 1 dc, 1 dc, 2 dc) rep from * all the way around, then join and fasten off.

Pot Holder Hook

Now turn the potholder right side up and find the top-most center st. Have 3 strands of chocolate colored yard ready for the top.

Row 1: Ch 5, then sl st into the same st.

Fasten off and tuck in loose threads.

Eyes

Ch 4, sl st to first ch to form loop.

Row 1: Use three strands of white yarn. Ch 3, work 13 more dc into loop, sl st to join to ch, fasten off. (14 sts)

Repeat so that you have two eyes.

Eyes

Now sew a green button in the center of each eye with green embroidery thread.

Beak

Next, place your eyes where you want them and sew them to your potholder with white embroidery thread.

Beak

Row 1: Use three strands of bronze yarn. Ch 3, work dc into first ch, fasten off.

Now sew the beak onto your potholder with orange embroidery thread. I like to sew the stitches on the bottom of the beak so they aren’t too visible.

Now shape the owl to your liking, lay flat, and smooth out. Tuck in any loose threads and your owl potholder should be ready!

Your New Spotted Owl!
