Classic Spaghetti Sauce Recipe

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 800g canned whole tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Fresh basil, chopped (for garnish)

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until they are soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add the minced garlic to the pot and sauté for about 1 minute, until fragrant.
  3. Pour in the canned tomatoes, including the liquid. Use a wooden spoon to crush the tomatoes if they are whole.
  4. Stir in the tomato paste, sugar, dried basil, and dried oregano. Mix well to incorporate all the ingredients.
  5. Bring the sauce to a simmer and reduce the heat to low. Let it gently simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. The sauce will thicken and the flavors will blend together.
  6. Season the sauce with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Serve this robust sauce over cooked spaghetti noodles, and garnish with chopped fresh basil.

Enjoy your homemade spaghetti sauce with a side of garlic bread and a fresh salad for a complete meal!
