During recent months, the Louvre Abu Dhabi quietly added some impressive pieces to its collection, including a rare Georges de la Tour painting, Girl Blowing on a Braisier (La Fillette au braisier), and Between Darkness and Light (Entre chien et loup) by Marc Chagall, along with 25 other pieces. Another exciting acquisition is a selection of 25 Japanese woodblock prints from the 18th and 19th centuries, including Katsushika Hokusai’s Under the Wave off Kanagawa, also called The Great Wave.
According to The National, Louvre Abu Dhabi director Manuel Rabate stated “Our new acquisitions represent the ongoing building of a fascinating and historically valuable national collection for Abu Dhabi which, in turn, contributes to our mission, which is to tell stories of cultural connections across different civilisations, times and geographies.”
The Louvre Abu Dhabi was designed by French designer and Pritzker Prize–winner Jean Nouvel, who also designed the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris. The museum opened in the fall of 2017 and the building is known for its wide, rounded dome top and starlike “Rain of Light” latticed ceiling.
It is located in Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, and has over 600 various items and works of art and over 300 masterpieces on loan.
