On July 29th, we celebrate International Tiger Day – a day dedicated to raising awareness about these magnificent big cats and the critical need for their conservation. Here are some captivating facts about tigers:

Conservation Efforts

• 🐯 Tiger populations are on the rise! Thanks to global conservation efforts, wild tiger numbers have increased from 3,200 in 2010 to about 5,570 in 2024.

• 🌿 The Tx2 initiative aim was to double wild tiger populations between 2010 and 2022, uniting 13 tiger range countries in this ambitious goal.

• 🇮🇳 India’s Project Tiger, launched in 1973, has been instrumental in protecting Bengal tigers, with their numbers rising from 1,411 in 2006 to 2,967 in 2018.

• 🏞️ Tiger reserves not only protect tigers but also preserve entire ecosystems, benefiting countless other species and local communities.

• 👁️ Tigers have night vision six times better than humans, thanks to a reflective layer behind their retinas called the tapetum lucidum.

• 🖐️ A tiger’s striped pattern is unique like a fingerprint – no two tigers have the same stripes.

• 🧡 The Sumatran tiger is the smallest subspecies, with a darker orange coat and thicker black stripes, perfectly adapted for their rainforest habitat.

• 🌴 The Malayan tiger is found exclusively in the southern and central parts of the Malay Peninsula, preferring tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests.

• 🗣️ Tigers communicate through scent marking, vocalizations, and visual signals. Their roars can be heard up to 2 miles (3 km) away!

• 🐾 A tiger’s home range can be vast – male Bengal tigers may roam an area of up to 60 square miles (155 sq km) in size.
