Classic White Gravy Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions:

  1. Melt the Butter: In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Be careful not to let it brown.
  2. Add the Flour: Whisk in the flour and keep stirring continuously. Cook for about 1 minute until the mixture turns slightly golden and emits a nutty aroma. This is your roux, which will thicken the gravy.
  3. Pour in the Milk: Gradually add the milk, whisking constantly to prevent any lumps. Continue to whisk until all the milk is incorporated.
  4. Season and Simmer: Add the salt and pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer, reduce the heat to low, and continue to cook and stir until the gravy thickens, which should take about 5-10 minutes.
  5. Adjust Consistency and Taste: If the gravy is too thick, you can thin it with a bit more milk. Check the seasoning and add more salt or pepper if needed.
  6. Serve: Serve hot over your favorite dishes.

Enjoy your homemade white gravy! It’s simple, delicious, and brings a touch of comfort to any meal.
