Kids love grilled cheese. Try these seven tasty twists on a family classic, one savory idea for each day of the week.
- 12 thin slices bread
- 1/4 cup (50 mL) softened butter (approx)
- 2 cups (500 mL) shredded cheese
- 1/2 cup (125 mL) Heinz Tomato Ketchup
Use the twists below to make a different grilled cheese every day. Lay the bread out on a clean surface and spread with butter. Combine the cheese, ketchup and additional ingredients (if using – see Twists below for suggestions) to make a delicious filling.
Spread a thin layer of the filling on the unbuttered side of one slice of bread. Top with second slice, butter side out. Transfer to a sandwich maker or folding grill. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes, or until bread is toasted and cheese is melted. Repeat with the remaining bread and filling mixture. Serve with the suggested accompaniments (if using). Makes 6 servings.
For a Radical Rueben, use marble rye bread, shredded Swiss cheese and add 1/2 cup (125 mL) of each well drained sauerkraut and chopped pastrami.
For a Cool Club House, use sour dough bread, shredded Cheddar cheese and add 3/4 cup (175 mL) chopped, cooked chicken and 1/4 cup (50 mL) finely chopped bacon.
For a Bodacious Bean Burrito, use wheat tortillas, shredded Monterey Jack cheese and add 1/2 cup (125 mL) chopped kidney beans, 1/4 cup (50 mL) each chopped green onions and green pepper tossed with 1 tsp (5 mL) chili powder.
For an Awesome Apple and Cinnamon combo, use raisin bread, shredded extra aged white Cheddar cheese and add 1 1/4 cup (300 mL) chopped, unpeeled apple tossed with 1 tsp (5mL) cinnamon.
For Pizza Pizzazz, use Italian bread, shredded mozzarella cheese and add 1/2 cup (125 mL) chopped pepperoni, 1/4 cup (50mL) each chopped green pepper and mushrooms tossed with 1/2 tsp (2mL) oregano leaves.
For Amazing Antipasto, use Italian bread, shredded Italian cheese blend and add 1 cup (250 mL) chopped mixed deli antipasto such as olives, artichokes, mushrooms and roasted red peppers.
For a Hearty Ham sandwich, use whole wheat bread, shredded Gruyere cheese and add 3/4 cup (175 mL) chopped, cooked ham and 1/4 cup (50 mL) chopped, green onion.
