This year I decided to be a little bit “crafty” and tackle making a wreath. I have to preface this by saying I have very few creative bones in my body and usually find any sort of crafting or Pinterest-type projects to be overwhelming. However, this year was a little different. My coworkers and I decided to participate in our office cubicle decorating contest and “Candyland Christmas” is our theme. I knew I wanted to do something special, so attempting to make my first ever wreath was an exciting feat!
I started with a simple styrofoam wreath base that you can find at any Michael’s or crafting type store. This was actually my most expensive item in the entire wreath, as I believe the styrofoam base was $12.99. Most everything else was on 50% off sale, but this was not. If this had also been on sale, I probably could have easily made this wreath for less than $20. The first step was simply wrapping the Styrofoam ring a pretty peppermint ribbon. As you can see, I unfortunately didn’t have enough to go all the way around, so I had to improvise. Michael’s is about an hour away from my house, so I didn’t bother going back. I decided to stop in at my local Target and get some other ribbon to cover the my base.
As you can see in the above picture, I supplemented the candycane ribbon with some festive sparkly red ribbon. Again, I’m completely new at crafting so we made a simple bow at the top and fastened it with some packing tape. I knew I was going to adorn the wreath, so I wasn’t too concerned about using tape. If you wanted a neater look, you could definitely use a hot glue gun to fasten the ribbon.
Next was the really fun part – picking out what ornaments to place on the wreath! In the top center section I placed a large gingerbread ornament I’ve had for years. I’ve always loved this ornament; however, it’s also been a bit of a pain because it is too heavy to hang on a simple branch so it turned out to be perfect for a wreath. I then added a variety of very inexpensive ornaments (.99) ranging to a little bit pricier – by pricier I think the most expensive one was $4-$5. I used a hot glue gun to attach the ornaments.
Because the sparkly ribbon and jammed packed ornaments were not enough, I decided I needed to add some pretty lights I picked up on Amazon.com. I’m really pleased with how it turned out and it was so easy to make! As you can see in the above picture the wreath is hanging on my cubicle wall.
My coworkers were quite pleased with the wreath addition to our Candyland Christmas! The picture above is my outside cubicle wall. You can see we used poster board to make the game board for the game. The large lollipops are simply paperplates wrapped in cellophane paper. I was able to find the adorable gingerbreads (small and large) at the Dollar Store. My coworker added the crepe paper curtain and I love the colors she choose.
Here is another look of the wreath. Up above you will see another Candyland craft that was super to cheap to make. The large purple candy is simply a toilet paper roll wrapped in cellophane paper. I then tied the ends with some ribbon and it turned out so cute and festive!
My kind coworker (who’s even on another team in the office!) let us borrow her cricut to make the Candyland sign. We used the same colors as the crepe paper streamers to tie it together.
The picture above is more Candyland Christmas fun through the walkway to our desks. It’s been so much fun getting in the Christmas spirit with this decorating contest. The hard part will be taking it all down and having to wait until next year to see it again!
