Our inspiration for today comes from children’s book illustrator Sydney Smith and his new book, Town is by the Sea.
In the story, written by Joanne Schwartz, a boy spends a pleasant day about the town by the sparkling sea, playing with friends at the playground, going to lunch and the shops with his mom, and making a visit to his grandfather’s grave, but his thoughts continually turn to his father, working in the dark mines below.
Sydney Smith’s illustrated books include:
Town Is by the Sea
The White Cat and the Monk
Sidewalk Flowers
Smoot: A Rebellious Shadow
He and Town is by the Sea writer Joanne Schwartz are both from Nova Scotia, Canada.
Town is by the Sea is available from Walker Books, illustrated by Sydney Smith, and written by Joanne Schwartz. This year it was named as a contender for the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal 2018 award.
