This cupcake potholder is made by using three strands of yarn at a time. This way, the pot holder turns out nice and thick. I also love the look of the large stitches, and it saves a bit of time. The only problem with crochet potholders is that they still have “holes” in them, so for an extra layer of safety, you can sew a piece of material to the back when you’re done, if you like.
Materials
- 1 skein Loops & Threads™ Impeccable™ brand in Claret
- 1 skein Loops & Threads™ Impeccable™ brand in Aran
- 1 skein Loops & Threads™ Impeccable™ brand in Petunia
N (9.00 mm) hook
These are the colors that I used in the picture, but feel free to use other colors as well – I do! Impeccable™ and Vanna’s Choice brands work best for me when making these pot holders.
Gauge
9 dc = 4 inches
Directions
Petunia Top
Make at least two balls of petunia yarn from the skein so you can work with three strands at a time, as pictured to the right. (In the pictures in the instructions I used white yarn, but for the potholder in the top picture you will use the petunia here.)
Ch 4, sl st to first ch to form loop.
Row 1: Ch 3, work 5 more dc into loop, turn. (6 sts)
Row 2: Ch 3, dc in same st, * 2 dc in next st; rep from * to end of row, turn. (12 sts)
Row 3: Ch 3, dc in same st, * 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st; rep from * to end of row. (18 sts)
Row 4: Ch 3, dc in same st, * 1 dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st; rep from * to end of row. (24 sts)
Fasten off and turn the piece over so that you are working with the opposite end that you just fastened off to make the frosting scallops. Rejoin at the top of the ch 3.
Frosting Scallops
We will still be using the three strands of petunia yarn for the scallops.
Row 1: Ch 1, 4 dc (in the side of the dc of the petunia top piece), sl st, 4 dc (in the side of the next dc of the petunia top piece), sl st into center loop, 4 dc (in the side of the next dc of the petunia top piece), sl st, 4 dc (in the side of the next dc of the petunia top piece), ch 1, sl st into second chain of the petunia top.
Fasten off. You should now have a petunia top with 5 scallops across the bottom.
Turn the top piece that you just made upside down, so that the scallops are on top, and work so that the side you like best is facing you. The hook in the picture below is pointing to the area where you will start the cake bottom. (Again, example in white.)
Cake Bottom
Now change to three strands of the aran colored yarn.
Row 1: Insert hook into second dc from the end, 1 sc, * skip next dc, 2 dc in sl st, skip next dc, 2 sc; rep from * 3 more times. Skip next dc, 2 dc in last sl st, skip next dc, 1 sc in next dc. (16 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st until end. (16 sts)
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st until end. (16 sts)
Row 4: Ch 1, turn, sc dec, 12 sc across, sc dec. (14 sts)
Row 5: Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st until end. (14 sts)
Row 6: Ch 1, turn, sc dec, 10 sc across, sc dec. (12 sts)
Row 5: Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st until end. (12 sts)
Row 6: Ch 1, turn, sc dec, 10 sc across, sc dec. (12 sts)
You should now have a completed potholder!
