May 27th Birthday Love: Neil Finn

Neil Finn

Happy birthday to Crowded House frontman Neil Finn, born on this day May 27, 1958 in Te Awamutu, New Zealand.

Finn’s rock beginnings may have started in late 1974, when Neil’s brother Tim formed the band Split Enz, and Neil eventually became co-frontman of the band along with his brother. He proved to be an excellent addition to the band, writing some of their most popular songs including the 1980 new wave/pop hit “I Got You” and “One Step Ahead” from the same year.

Split Enz rode the new wave until 1984, when the band broke up and Tim Finn went to England. A year later, Neil Finn and Split Enz drummer Paul Hester founded Crowded House, and they released the brilliant tracks “Don’t Dream It’s Over,” “Something So Strong,” and  “Fall at Your Feet,” among other great ’80’s pop songs.

Finn is currently a member of both Crowded House and as of 2018, Fleetwood Mac. At the time that Finn joined Fleetwood Mac, Mick Fleetwood stated “I’ve always, right from the beginning, loved his songwriting – especially one song that drove me over the wall – Don’t Dream It’s Over – years and years ago.”

Here is Neil Finn singing “Fall At Your Feet” with Roddy Frame of Aztec Camera and Graham Gouldman of 10cc.
