The Ugly Duckling Illustration by Theo van Hoyetma

Prolific fairy tale spinner Hans Christian Andersen was born on this day April 2, 1805 in Odense, Denmark, and wrote some of the most loved children’s stories of all time, including The Emperor’s New Clothes, The Little Mermaid, The Nightingale, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, The Red Shoes, The Princess and the Pea, The Snow Queen, The Ugly Duckling, The Little Match Girl, and Thumbelina.

Illustration by Dutch artist Theo van Hoyetma (1893)

“His own image; no longer a dark, gray bird, ugly and disagreeable to look at, but a graceful and beautiful swan. To be born in a duck’s nest, in a farmyard, is of no consequence to a bird, if it is hatched from a swan’s egg.”

-Hans Christian Andersen, The Ugly Duckling
